Who to Call for Debt Relief
When it comes to relieving your debts, there are a variety of ways to handle the situation. One of the first questions people ask is often who to call for debt relief. You should know before calling anyone that every person's financial situation is different and what works for a friend or family member may not work for you. Also, don't be roped in by commercials for debt relief help – there are companies who are legitimate but in many cases there are also more beneficial routes to take. Unfortunately there are scam companies so a consumer in debt must be careful.
Debt relief help can be found through a variety of avenues. Legitimate debt relief companies can help you, however there is likely a fee charged. Make sure you understand the services you will be receiving and the cost for those services before signing anything. Also, checking the reputation of any debt relief company with the Better Business Bureau is wise. Consumer Credit Counseling, or CCC, is a nonprofit organization with many locations across the country that provides services free of charge. They work in the exact same way as the highly advertised debt relief companies do, only without the fees.
Whether you call Consumer Credit Counseling or one of the companies that charges a fee, they will handle your case in much the same way. First, you will need to gather proof of income and all your bills. This might include student loans, credit card payments, hospital bills and more. If the company or organization cannot handle student loan debt, the Department of Education can sometimes defer payments or reduce them to a manageable level for you. Time is of the essence, no matter what kind of debt you have.
You can also call your creditors directly for debt relief. You can negotiate with them just as credit counseling and debt relief services can. The only difference is that you'll be sending multiple payments to your creditors rather than one payment to a debt relief agency. These agencies will take your monthly lump sum payment and spread it out among your creditors, then as they are paid off one at a time the excess funds will be applied to your other creditors to pay them off more quickly. This is a viable option for anyone who feels overwhelmed and wants help getting out of debt.
