How Does a Debt Relief Settlement Program Work?
One option for individuals in debt is to use a debt relief settlement program. This should not be confused with a write-off or even a debt consolidation There are a variety of debt settlement companies who can negotiate deals with your creditors and knock charges and fees off your bill. They may even be able to re-age your account, which means it is brought current rather than being shown as late on your credit report. The first step, however, is establishing the settlement. There are many companies who can help you do this.
You should know that there are a few scam companies who promise debt relief but do nothing except take more money from you. The good news is that they can be sniffed out by checking with the Better Business Bureau and doing a little online research. You will be glad to know that there are plenty of legitimate and trustworthy companies who can help you settle debts with your creditors. Sometimes using their services is beneficial because credit card companies may respond more favorably to a company who knows what they are doing in this matter as opposed to a desperate consumer.
This does not mean you can take matters into your own hands, because you can. There is nothing a settlement company or debt relief company can do that you cannot do. It just takes more time and effort on your part, but in the long run may look better on your credit report than if you did use a settlement company. You will need to call each creditor and speak honestly about your financial situation, inquiring about settlement deals or other ways you can save money while satisfying your debt. Because credit card companies just want their money, they are usually more than happy to work with you.
Once you've reached a debt relief settlement agreement through an agency, company or on your own, it is imperative that you adhere to the rules of the agreement. Make sure all your payments are on time and the amount they are supposed to be or your settlement agreement may be broken and your account may be reported in a negative way to the credit bureaus. If this means you must get a second job for awhile or find extra income some other way then so be it, it is worth the hard work to improve your credit as this also improves your quality of life.
