Discovering Credit Counseling Solutions
The impact of too much debt can be devastating on an individual, family or even a business. The sad news is that there are many people struggling with debt and it is having a negative effect on their lives. Much of the strain in families and marriages is caused by financial difficulties, but when those difficulties are removed many of the old problems seem to vanish. The fact is that being weighed down by excessive debt is stressful and can cause overall unhappiness in many areas of your life. However there are credit counseling solutions that can help you get out of debt and stay that way.
One option is to use a non profit agency. The most well-known is Consumer Credit Counseling, commonly abbreviated CCC. There are also some Christian based non profit credit counseling services you may want to check into if this approach appeals to you. The best thing about a non profit agency is that their services are provided free of charge. This is not the case with the debt relief companies you see advertised on TV and the Internet, they usually charge a fee and some may have hidden fees that surprise you and leave you in more debt.
If you don't use a non profit agency, make sure you are well aware of what you are paying for and how much you are paying. Never, ever sign a binding contract or agreement with one of these companies until you are 100 percent clear on all the details. To find government approved debt relief companies, visit the FTC website or the Department of Trustees under the Department of Justice. There you will find listings of companies that have been approved by the U.S. Government for credit counseling, which means they are trustworthy.
While credit counseling solutions are one way to go, they are not the only way. You can contact your creditors yourself and negotiate payments and deals. In some cases credit card companies will reduce fees and interest rates, or even work out a settlement deal for your balance that is less than what you owe. Another way to take care of debt is to apply any windfall money, tax refund money or stimulus money received towards paying off your creditors. Consolidation of credit card bills through a loan, consolidation program or transfer of balances to one card may also be an option for you.
