Credit Counseling Consumer Services
May Help Repair Your Finances
Are you struggling with debt? If so, you are not alone. Many people are in over their heads when it comes to credit card debt and other forms of debt. This is not surprising, considering the average person carries one or more credit cards. And many are unable to pay even the minimum balance each month, leaving them with even more debt to pay off. Credit counseling consumer services can be of assistance for anyone who feels their finances have become unmanageable.
You have probably seen the television and Internet advertisements for debt relief services that promise to reduce your debt and help you get back on your feet. There are a few things you should know about these services. Number one, they do not do anything for you that you cannot do on your own. And, they often charge a fee for their services. There are also questionable companies to steer clear of that promise they can repair bad credit immediately, it simply cannot be done. Credit repair takes time and effort to achieve.
In many areas there is a nonprofit service called Consumer Credit Counseling, commonly abbreviated as CCC. This service is free for consumers, making it more attractive to those in debt than the services you have to pay for. Check your local listings to see if there is an office in your area. When you set an appointment, you will need to bring documentation of your income, all your bills and all your credit cards. The first thing that will be done is the cutting in half of your cards. Many offices make wall art out of the slashed credit cards of previous customers. This can be painful but it is a big step. Whether or not you want to hold on to one card for emergencies is up to you.
During credit counseling consumer appointments, you will sit down with an expert who will add up all your debt and compare it to your income. From there, your counselor will call all your creditors and set up payment plans designed to save you money. All your payments will be lumped into one monthly sum that will be paid to the credit counseling office, who will disperse the funds among your creditors in the best way they see fit. Once you start working with such an agency, you can expect collection calls to stop. Just make sure to get your monthly payment into the counseling facility, which will likely be less than you owed before due to reduced rates and fees.
